MANILA – Communist Party of the Philippines founder Jose Maria “Joma” Sison called on the youth to hold massive rallies à la the 1970 First Quarter Storm against the Duterte administration.
Sison urged protests against the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion law, the plan to amend the 1987 Constitution, and the series of attacks against the media.
“The student youth of today can and should launch huge mass marches and rallies in the National Capital Region and in the provinces, like during the First Quarter Storm of 1970,” said Sison.
The First Quarter Storm refers to the mass demonstrations held before the dictator Ferdinand Marcos declared martial law.
Malacañang shrugged off Sison’s statement.
“We don’t attach too much importance to Joma Sison,” Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque said on Monday. “I hope he has enough grandchildren to heed his call.”
Moving forward has been hard for the communist leader, Roque said.
“Problem with Joma Sison is he is stuck in history,” the Palace official said. “He never moved beyond the First Quarter Storm.”/PN
