WHILE Jose Manalo’s hilarious schtick as “Mayor Jose” is a big hit among viewers of the TV5 noontime variety show “E.A.T.,” the television host has no desire to be a politician.

At a press conference for his and Wally Bayola’s hosting stint for “Wow Mali: Doble Tama,” the comedian revealed that he has received numerous offers to run for public office.

He turned all of them down. “Hindi po mangyayari,” he said. “I have had offers to run for councilor, vice mayor … but no, politics really is out of my lane.”

He acknowledged the fact that he’s not equipped for that line of job. “It’s difficult. You need to be well-educated. You need to know what you’re doing—‘di ‘yung uupo ka na lang,” he pointed out.

“Artists like us make people happy, help others. In some ways, that’s how politicians are,” he said.

Meanwhile, despite his sustained popularity, Jose doesn’t let the hype get to him. “Ever since I became a celebrity, I have never really thought I have leveled up,” he said. “I don’t let myself get carried away by people’s cheering and applause.” (Allan Policarpio  © Philippine Daily Inquirer)
