MANILA – After winning the MVP award for record four consecutive years, San Miguel Beermen center June Mar Fajardo now wants to impose his presence in international tournaments with Gilas Pilipinas.

The 6-foot-10 Cebuano said he will keep himself in shape as the national men’s basketball team prepares for the FIBA World Cup qualifiers, which starts next month.

ā€œGusto kong i-prove sa sarili ko na kaya ko ring makipagsabayan saĀ international tournaments,ā€ Fajardo told the press after the Leo Awards on Oct. 20. ā€œKaya paghahandaan ko talagaĀ iyangĀ FIBA qualifier.ā€

Often saddled with injuries, Fajardo – he is turning 28 next month – has yet to make much impact playing for Gilas since getting called for the first time in 2013.

In the FIBA Asia Cup in Lebanon in August, the big man saw limited action after sustaining a calf muscle injury while playing for Beermen in the PBA Governors’ Cup.

But his presence in the upcoming FIBA World qualifying games will be a huge boost for Gilas, especially with Filipino-German Christian Standhardinger and naturalized center Andray Blatche both unavailable.

ā€œAko naman kung makakapaglaro akoĀ (paraĀ Gilas), maglalaro ako. Iyon nga langĀ nagka-injury dati,ā€ Fajardo said.

Gilas Pilipinas is facing a tough task in the home-and-away FIBA World Cup qualifier as it was grouped with heavyweights Australia, Japan and Chinese-Taipei./PN
