MANILA – “I won’t support an impeachment process against the President,” declared Sen. Joseph Victor Ejercito.
President Benigno Aquino III still has majority support in Congress so impeachment is unlikely to prosper, Ejercito also said.
The Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP) is “not enough” to impeach him, added the newbie senator.
“(An impeachment process) is more political than legal,” the son of former president and now Manila City mayor Joseph “Erap” Estrada said.
Ejercito said the administration’s Liberal Party has the “numbers” to block Aquino’s impeachment in the House of Representatives.
Meanwhile, the opposition United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) has yet to disclose any political plans for the next polls.
But Ejercito said they will probably be “busy” for recruitment “by January 2015.”
“Hindi pa kami talagang ganun nag-aayos. We think 2016 is quite far. Expect us to be serious the year before the elections,” he said.
UNA will likely field Vice President Jejomar Binay the party standard bearer.
Either Sen. Jinggoy Estrada or Batangas’ Gov. Vilma Santos Recto are being touted as Binay’s possible running mate./PN
