MANILA – Sen. Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito is pushing for a sufficient budget for the Philippine National Police (PNP) in order for them to acquire “two to three” brand new helicopters.
The senator made the statement following the crash landing of the Air Force Sokol chopper due to a “mechanical problem” in Palawan on Nov. 8, injuring at least four of its passengers.
“It is unfortunate that the PNP currently does not have any single flying air asset. This is a necessity, not a luxury,” Ejercito said.
According to him, the purchase of new helicopters, which is expected to boost morale among the country’s cops, could also help the government’s efforts in the campaign against illegal drugs and criminality.
They serve as “eyes in the sky,” the senator from San Juan City added.
Ejercito previously called the PNP’s lack of a single flying air asset as “unimaginable” and “unacceptable.”
“Alam nating mayroon kayong iilang chopper, pero huwag na natin ipagamit sa PNP iyon dahil bumabagsak na ang ilan kahit walang kaaway, at karamihan ay dapat i-retire at i-showcase na lamang sa Air Force museum,” he said during a speech for the recognition rites of the Philippine Public Safety College – National Police Training Institute in Calamba, Laguna.
Ejercito also proposed to equip the Philippine police with modern surveillance equipment./PN
