Kalibo Foundation Day bill up for Marcos’ signature

KALIBO, Aklan – The long-awaited legislation “Kalibo Foundation Day” approved by the House and the Senate will now be sent to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to be signed into law.

House Bill (HB) No. 3970 is entitled “An Act declaring November 3 of every year a special working holiday in the Municipality of Kalibo, Province of Aklan, to be known as the Kalibo Foundation Day.”

Both houses of Congress passed HB 3970 on September 25, 2024.

Aklan 1st District’s Rep. Carlito Marquez, who authored the bill, stressed that it is high time to institutionalize the Foundation Day to mark the important milestone of history of the people of Kalibo.

“This will be a time to reflect on the past, to remember their forefathers, and to revisit the ideas that led to the formation Kalibo as a town. Let said occasion and every year thereafter be an opportunity to retell the stories of their struggles and sacrifices to younger generations,” he said.

Sen. Joseph Victor Ejercito, who chairs the Senate Committee on Local Government, adopted Committee Report No. 162 on November 15, 2023, with no amendments.

The capital town of Kalibo was founded on November 3, 1571 under the encomienda system during the time of Governor Miguel Lopes de Legaspi./PN
