KALIBO, Aklan – Some vendors are “buying time” before relocating to Kalibo public market temporary site, although, they are not opposing the government project to modernize the existing public market.

Rosalia Dela Cruz Tampos, president of Kalibo Public Market Fish Vendors Association, has urged the local government of Kalibo to listen to their sentiments before the relocation begins.

Tampos said the market vendors want the assurance that they will occupy the new stalls and rented spaces once the new public market is constructed and ready for occupancy.

Mary Gay Joel, head of the Municipal Economic Enterprise Development Office (MEEDO), said the vendors will be accommodated in the new public market, provided, they are not delinquent in the payment of rental fees and business permits.

Non-delinquent market vendors will be transferred to Kalibo Eastern Side Terminal along San Lorenzo Drive in Barangay Andagao to pave the way for the construction of new Kalibo public market.

The temporary market will have stalls and tables, with provision of water and electricity.

So far, market vendors who decided to relocate in their designated vending areas inside the Kalibo Eastern side terminal are exempted to pay rental fees for three months.

Those who are selling goods and constructed their own stalls along San Lorenzo Drive will not pay rental fees for one year.

The market (Design and Build Scheme) located on Toting Reyes Street and Roxas Avenue Extension must be cleared of vendors before it undergoes construction by Rotaflex Construction and Development.

Last month, Mayor Juris Sucro also held discussions for the smooth transition of vendors to the temporary market site.

He said the modern market will boost development of Kalibo, create job opportunities and improve economic and social infrastructure.

The new public market, which features essential facilities, is initially funded through a P300-million government loan and is expected for completion by next year./PN
