KALIBO, Aklan – This capital town is celebrating its 445th Foundation Day.
Various activities were lined up for the celebration that started Oct. 21 but the highlight will be on Nov. 3.
A Thanksgiving Mass will be held at St. John the Baptist Cathedral at 6:30 a.m.
A Foundation Day Parade will follow at 7:30 a.m. from the ABL Sports and Cultural Center to the Pastrana Park, where a commemorative program will be held at 9 a.m.
A research by Professor John Barrios titled “Calivo: The Founding of a Town” stated that Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, first governor and captain-general of the Philippines, established Aclan/Calivo as an encomienda on Nov. 3, 1571.
Originally called Akean, Calivo got its name in 1569 after Father Juan de Alba baptized 1,000 natives of the town.
The local government clarified there will be work and classes in all levels on Nov. 3.
Outstanding business and real property taxpayers and the Barangay Night will be held at the Magsaysay Park on Nov. 2.
There will also be a Videokantahan on Oct. 27, WSL Dance Contest on Oct. 29, a photo contest on Oct. 30, and the Search for Calendar Girls and Halloween presentation on Oct. 31 at the Pastrana Park.
Various schools will hold a cultural show on Oct. 25, while ObrAti (Dress an Ati Contest) will be held on Oct. 26. The Kalibohian and Agro Trade Fair was also opened at the Pastrana Park. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
