KALIBO, Aklan – The rehabilitation of this capital town’s slaughterhouse will begin this June.

It is a joint venture between the local government unit (LGU) of Kalibo and slaughterhouse operator Philippine Slaughterhouse Management Operation, Inc. (PSMO).

Located in Barangay Tinigaw, the slaughterhouse is about 2 kilometers from Kalibo’s downtown area.

The signing of memorandum of agreement between Kalibo mayor William Lachica and PSMO officials will be on June 3 at the town hall. The groundbreaking ceremony for rehabilitation, meanwhile, is scheduled on June 13.

Municipal Economic Enterprise and Development Office (MEEDO) head Engineer Jesse Fegarido said the rehabilitation will make the Kalibo slaughterhouse pass the Class “AA” standard, in line with the guidelines of National Meat Inspection Service.

The class upgrade of the slaughterhouse will ensure the sustainable supply of safe and clean meat in Kalibo markets.

PSMO will spend around P30 million for upgrading the facilities and equipment at the slaughterhouse.

PSMO and the LGU will jointly manage and oversee the production and operation of the facility for 28 years.

Butchers of the slaughterhouse will also be trained on modern methods of safely slaughtering animals.

For the first five years, the LGU will get a 10-percent share in the slaughterhouse’s profit, 12 percent in the next 6 to 10 years, and 20 percent in the succeeding years.

The profit sharing will depend on the number of heads of animals slaughtered per day while fees from other services such as ante-mortem and post-mortem fees will be exclusively collected by the LGU. (With Akean Forum/PN)
