AKLAN – The local government of Kalibo in this province suspended in-person classes in all levels, private and public schools, yesterday, September 16.
In an advisory, Mayor Juris Sucro said face-to-face classes will be suspended in view of “Yellow Red Alert” or heightened risk of flooding in the province capital town due to heavy rains.
The mayor said the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) has imposed its “Bravo Moderate Risk Emergency Preparedness and Response (EPR) Protocol” in Aklan due to the impact of flooding and heavy rains.
“Aklan River is currently at an elevated level, fluctuating between 3.0 meters during low tide and 3.7 meters during high tide. These levels are above the ideal level of 2.0 meters to 2.5 meters, which is why we remain under the “Yellow Flood Alert” (3.5 meters),” Mayor Sucro stressed.
Severe flooding due to heavy rains poses challenges for students and parents and in some cases, schools in flood-prone areas force to shut down.
And with flooding threatening low-lying areas and near river channels, the mayor reminded the residents to remain cautious and vigilant./PN
