KALIBO, Aklan – The local government of Kalibo suspended afternoon in-person classes in both public and private schools.
The suspension of face-to-face (F2F) classes from preschool to senior high school will start on Monday, April 8, to April 30, 2024 due to intense heat levels being felt in the province of Aklan.
In response to high heat index, Kalibo’s Mayor Juris Sucro issued Executive Order (EO) No. 32 on Wednesday, April 3, suspending afternoon classes for the next three weeks.
“It is necessary to suspend F2F classes to safeguard learners and personnel from unnecessary physical dangers brought about by extreme weather disturbance,” read part of the EO.
Schools are encouraged to shift from physical classes to alternative learning modes or remote learning with the assistance of learning support aides and facilitators in the implementation of classes across delivery modalities.
The EO further stated that school heads and administrators at the collegiate level, including graduate schools and law school, have the discretion to cancel or suspend classes due to high heat index.
Western Visayas is experiencing extreme heat with the heat index reaching 42 degrees Celsius or higher.
Health authorities have reminded the public to take precautions against soaring temperatures – drink plenty of water, avoid coffee, tea and alcohol, and limit the amount of time spend outdoors.
Symptoms of heat-related illnesses are vomiting, sweating heavily, dizziness or light headedness, weak but fast pulse, exhaustion or fatigue, feeling of nausea, and blacking out or feeling dizzy when standing./PN
