KALIBO, Aklan – Vendors of Kalibo public market will be relocated in May to make way for the modernization project, the Municipal Economic Enterprise Development Office (MEEDO) said.
The modernization of the public market will begin after the vendors are relocated to Kalibo Eastern Side Terminal in San Lorenzo Drive, Barangay Andagao.
MEEDO head Mary Gay Quimpo-Joel said the construction of interim public terminal for jeepneys, buses and multicabs along F. Quimpo Street beside the 2,168-square vacant lot of CityMall Kalibo is still ongoing.
Temporary stalls will be constructed for traders of dry goods in the 2,049-square meter Kalibo Eastern Side Terminal after the operations of jeepneys, buses and multicabs for eastern towns are transferred in a vacant lot beside CityMall Kalibo.
Makeshift spaces already constructed in the leased lot beside Kalibo Eastern Side Terminal will be occupied by vendors in the fish, chicken and meat sections.
Last month, the Kalibo Public Market United Stall Owners and Vendors Association appealed to Kalibo mayor Juris Sucro to allow the vendors to sell their goods along Toting Reyes Street while the construction is underway.
The public market (design and build scheme) upgrade is initially projected to cost P300-million. It will be constructed by Rotaflex Construction and Development Company.
The project is expected to contribute to the positive development of the market community, and in turn the town of Kalibo.
Kalibo public market is located along Toting Reyes Street and Roxas Avenue Extension. The market serves home to stall-renting vendors, producers, ambulant vendors, porters, and mostly consumers./PN
