BACOLOD City – Mt. Kanlaon Volcano remained under Alert Level 2, indicating moderate volcanic unrest, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS). The current alert status suggests increased chances of phreatic or steam-driven eruptions but no imminent major eruption.

Over the past 24 hours, the volcano exhibited five ash emissions, lasting between two and 32 minutes each. PHIVOLCS also recorded five volcanic earthquakes and a high sulfur dioxide flux of 4,284 tons per day (as of Sunday, November 17). A thick ash plume reaching 400 meters high was observed, drifting northward. Ground deformation continued to be monitored, indicating possible magma movement beneath the surface.

PHIVOLCS reiterated the prohibition of entry into the four-kilometer permanent danger zone (PDZ) surrounding the volcano due to the risk of sudden explosions and hazardous emissions. Aircraft pilots are also cautioned to avoid flying close to the summit as volcanic ash and debris may pose risks to aviation.

Also, residents in nearby areas are advised to remain vigilant and prepare for potential ashfall, explosions, and other hazards. PHIVOLCS has alerted local authorities to ensure communities are ready for possible evacuations should the situation escalate further.

Kanlaon Volcano is located on the island of Negros, affecting areas in Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental. (Watchmen Daily Journal)/PN
