MANILA – TNT Katropa squandered a double-digit lead before hanging on for an 87-85 win against the San Miguel Beermen in Game 2 of the 2016-2017 Oppo PBA Philippine Cup best-of-seven semifinals on Friday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Jeth Troy Rosario recovered from a scoreless outing with 14 points to lead the way for the Katropa, which bounced back from an 111-98 defeat to the Beermen in Game 1 and tie the series at 1-1.

Ranidel de Ocampo added 13 markers, while Moala Tautuaa and Roger Pogoy had 12 and 11 points, respectively, for the Katropa, which also got double-double 10 points and 11 assists from Jayson Castro.

Trailing early in the game, the Katropa went on a strong run late in the opening frame behind Castro and Rosario for a 20-13 lead. The edge later grew to its largest at 44-33 early in the third frame on hits by Tautuaa, de Ocampo and Rosario.

The Beermen responded with a huge run behind Arwind Santos and Keith Agovida to take a slim 56-55 lead. But conversions by Rosario, de Ocampo and Pogoy allowed the Katropa to regain a 65-59 advantage at the end of the third quarter.

After another run by the Beermen to open the final frame, the Katropa pulled away anew to 75-64 on hits by de Ocampo and Pogoy. But the Beermen leaned on June Mar Fajardo and Marcio Lassiter to take an 82-80 lead.

The Katropa quickly answered with seven straight points from Kelly Williams, de Ocampo and Castro for an 87-82 lead. Three free throws by Alex Cabagnot cut the Beermen’s deficit to 87-85. San Miguel had a chance to win but failed to convert at the end.

Fajardo finished with 25 points, 11 rebound and seven blocks, Cabagnot added 24 points, on five triples, for the Beermen, which is hoping to take its third consecutive All-Filipino crown./PN
