MANILA – The TNT Katropa survived another tight match against the San Miguel Beermen to score a 98-92 win in Game 3 of the 2016-2017 Oppo PBA Philippine Cup best-of-seven semifinals on Sunday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Ranidel de Ocampo led the way with 24 points apiece, with 16 coming in the opening half, for the Katropa, which moved two wins closer to returning to the All-Filipino Conference finale.
Roger Pogoy added a career-high 22 points, on six triples, while Kelly Williams, Jayson Castro and Moala Tautuaa had 11, 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Katropa, which also scored an 87-85 win in Game 2 on Friday.
The Beermen surged to an early lead on two triples by Marcio Lassiter. But the Katropa quickly responded behind Castro and Pogoy to take a 19-16 lead. The Beermen then regained the lead to end the quarter on baskets by Gabby Espinas and Brian Heruela.
The Beermen maintained the slim lead in the second quarter but consecutive hits by de Ocampo surged the Katropa ahead at 39-38. After an exchange of hits, the Katropa built a 53-49 halftime lead behind Pogoy and Larry Fonacier.
The Katropa started the third quarter with an 8-0 run behind Tautuaa and Castro to build a 61-49 edge. The Beermen, however, responded behind Lassiter and Alex Cabagnot to tie it at 72-all heading into the final quarter.
The Beermen continued its run in the fourth quarter as it built a 78-75 lead on hits by Cabagnot and Espinas but the Katropa answered with its own run on back-to-back triples by Pogoy and inside hits by Danny Seigle for an 87-81 edge.
The Beermen converted baskets from Chris Ross and Arwind Santos to come to within 92-90, but hits by Williams and free throws by Jeth Troy Rosario and De Ocampo sealed the win for the Katropa.
Lassiter and Cabagnot finished with 18 points apiece, while June Mar Fajardo was held to 16 points and nine rebounds for the defending champion Beermen, which was on an 11-game winning run before the Game 2 and 3 losses./PN
