MANILA – Kaya Futbol Club-Iloilo is aiming to secure second place in the 2020 Philippines Football League (PFL) when it faces champion United City Football Club at the PFF National Training Center in Carmona, Cavite at 8 p.m. tonight.
The Iloilo City-based football club (eight points on two wins and two draws) lost its chance to contend for the PFL championship after suffering a second consecutive draw when it was held by Mendiola FC 1991 last Friday.
United City FC, formerly Ceres-Negros FC, secured its fourth consecutive PFL championship later that day following a lopsided 7-1 triumph over Stallion Laguna FC that put them at 12 points on four wins.
“When we set out on this campaign, we truly believed we were ready to claim that elusive League Title. Unfortunately, we’ve fallen short of that goal. Everyone at the club is bitterly disappointed that we couldn’t extend the title race to the last day,” Kaya-Iloilo said.
“For that, we offer no excuses, only a commitment to ruthlessly assess and work on our shortcomings. But despite the pain of defeat, we have one game left – a chance to end our year on a high,” it added.
“We’ve had to overcome so much to play this year. Now it’s time to pick ourselves up again for one last battle on Monday night against United City FC,” the Iloilo City-based football club further said.
Kaya-Iloilo would like to secure a second place finish in the tournament to earn a slot in the qualification phase of the 2021 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League. United City FC, as the tournament champion, earned the automatic qualification into the tournament.
In other fixtures of the day, Stallion Laguna will battle with Azkals Developmental Team at 9 a.m. while Maharlika Manila FC and Mendiola FC 1991 square off at 4:30 p.m./PN
