PAVIA, Iloilo – Kaya Futbol Club-Iloilo maintained their hold on the top spot of the 2024 Philippines Football League after a 6-0 beating of the Philippine Army on Saturday afternoon at the Campo Alcantara Stadium here.

Jarvey Gayoso spearheaded the attack with two goals. Robert Lopez Mendy, Mar Diano and Shuto Komaki added a conversion each, while the Army also committed an own goal violation.

Lopez Mendy opened the scoring for Kaya-Iloilo in the 22nd minute as he received the cross from Komaki before he cut back to his left foot to drain the goal off the post past the Army defender.

After misses in his early attempt, Gayoso managed to score his first of the match in the 29th minute as he converted his own deflected shot into a goal to double Kaya-Iloilo’s advantage.

Kaya-Iloilo made it a 3-0 count just before the halftime break as Diano had a 1-2 play with Marwin Angeles in the 40th minute before the former knocked down a shot from inside the box.

The Ilonggo booters continued to pull away in the second half as Komaki attacked from the right wing to nail his goal from the top corner from beyond the box in the 62nd minute.

Philippine Army then committed a costly error in the 71st minute as one of their players accidentally sent Kaya-Iloilo’s Yiyoung Park’s shot to the target to increase the lead to five goals.

Gayoso then capped the lopsided win for Kaya-Iloilo with his second connection of the match in the 75th minute as he slotted the ball past the Army keeper from a perfect through ball by Martini Rey.

The defending champions Kaya-Iloilo remained on top of the standings with 31 points on 10 victories and a draw, while Philippine Army is in 12th spot with eight points on two wins, one draw, and eight losses.
