MANILA – Kia Picanto does not seem to have any plan to form a competitive squad in the Philippine Basketball Association.
Picanto was proposing to trade its No. 1 overall pick in the Rookie Draft to San Miguel Beermen’s seldom-used players Jay-R Reyes, Rashawn McCarthy and Keith Agovida.
The pre-Draft trade proposal was sent to the PBA Commissioner’s Office late Friday.
Reports had it this was the second trade proposal that Picanto and Beermen sent to the PBA Commissioner’s Office; Commissioner Andres Narvasa rejected the first one for being lopsided.
If ever the second trade proposal gets a nod, Beermen will have a chance to snag Filipino-German big man Christian Standhardinger, who will not be able to play at least until April next year.
Reyes, a direct hire by the Welcoat Paints franchise (now Rain or Shine Elasto Painters) when it entered the league in 2006, has rarely played since moving to Beermen two years ago.
Agovida was a former player of Picanto before he was traded last year for Ryan Arana, who has since been released. McCarthy was Picanto’s rookie draftee last year but was left unsigned.
This was not the first time the Picanto franchise made dubious deals for its top draft picks. Two years ago, Kia let go of Jeth Troy Rosario to TNT KaTropa in exchange for reserve players.
Last year, Picanto also made a lot of questionable trades, letting go of key players Agovida, Aldrech Ramos, Rommel Canaleta, Bradwyn Guinto, and Alex Mallari in separate teams./PN
