BORACAY – Koreans continued to be the No. 1 foreign market of this island resort.
The number of foreigners in Boracay surged to 364,142 during the first four months of the year.
High-spending Koreans numbered 28,449 in April alone — or 36 percent of the 70,264 total foreign arrivals that month.
Chinese travelers remained the second top market with 25,141 arrivals. Taiwanese tourists followed with 4,720 arrivals.
Other top foreign markets include tourists from the United Kingdom (2,058), United States (2,017), Malaysia (1,938), Australia (1,529), Singapore (1,282), United Arab Emirates (1,208), and Germany (898).
Also in April, Boracay welcomed 149,292 local tourists, or 64 percent of the 122,233 total arrivals, Malay Municipal Tourism Office data showed.
Korea also topped the major overseas markets overall from January to April with 127,231 arrivals. China followed with 125,052 and Taiwan with 17,850.
Regional flights from Incheon (Korea), Taipei (Taiwan) and mainland China to the Kalibo International Airport and increased domestic flights to the Godofredo P. Ramos (Caticlan) Airport from Manila and Cebu contributed to upward tourist arrival trend, the Municipal Tourism Office said.
Total tourist arrivals in Boracay from January to April hit 744,704 — up 11 percent from 671,876 in the same period in 2016.
Boracay was named one of the world’s friendliest islands by Travel+Leisure magazine and among the Top 10 Asia’s Best Islands in the 2017 Travelers’ Choice Awards. (With Aklan Forum Journals/PN)
