ILOILO City – A store owner was arrested at his house in Zone 2, Barangay Rizal, La Paz district hours before the New Year for alleged illegal discharge of firearm that wounded his neighbor.
The 44-year-old Nilo Magcanam, a resident of the said barangay, was taken to the La Paz police station after admitting to the police that he fired his gun that wounded 20-year-old Kate Nichole Cambronero.
Cambronero was hit on her left knee. She was brought to the West Visayas State University Medical Center.
According to La Paz police chief, Police Major Jose Val Ladublan, the incident happened around 9:15 p.m. on Dec. 31. The victim was lying on her bed.
“Ang natabu to ang kaso ‘ya gid is illegal discharge of firearm kay, ti, nagpalupok ‘ni siya sa iya nga kwarto, ang bala naglusot sa ila nga dingding kag naglapos sa piyak nga balay. Didto na nadaplisan ang biktima,” said Ladublan.
He added, “We were able to identify the suspect through the tragectory sang bala nga halin sa balay sang suspect. When we asked him, he admitted that he was the one who fired his gun.”
However, the gun used was not recovered, only the magazine of .45 cartridge case and one deformed bullet. They were subjected to ballistic examination.
This was the first time a suspect in a stray bullet incident was arrested, according to Major Shella Mae Sangrines, spokesperson of the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO).
This was also the second stray bullet incident in Western Visayas and Iloilo City since the holiday season.
The first was on Dec. 25, around 12:05 a.m., at PHHC, Mandurriao district.
Aiza Joy Lobo, 33, of Barangay Block 17, was in a drinking session when she saw a slug on the floor.
It apparently went through their ceiling and then landed on the floor.
No one in the house was hit./PN
