ILOILO City – The pedestrian overpass between Iloilo National High School (INHS) and West Visayas State University (WVSU) on Luna Street, La Paz should not remain a “white elephant”, stressed the Iloilo City Public Safety and Transportation Management Office (PSTMO).
PSTMO is making sure it is utilized by the public, especially the students of the two schools. It recently cleaned the overpass; soon a repainting would be done to cover the graffiti that defaced it
The pedestrian overpass was constructed in the mid-1990s to ease traffic congestion in the area but very few cared to use it.
This time, said PSTMO head Jeck Conlu, the overpass must be put to good use to ensure the safety of WVSU and INHS students, teachers, parents, and the public in general.
PSTMO reopened the overpass on June 10. It should help ensure public safety and result to a smoother of vehicles most especially during rush hours (between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. and between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m.), said Conlu.
PSTMO partially closed the pedestrian lane between INHS and at the second gate of WVSU, and designated eight personnel from its Special Services Division (SSD) to ensure that students, teachers and commuters use the overpass.
“The pedestrian lane will only be used by persons with disabilities, pregnant women, senior citizens, and students or teachers carrying bulky things,” said Conlu.
Conlu already talked to INHS teachers. He said he would be meeting WVSU officials, too. (With a report from the Iloilo City PIO/PN)
