A SQUAD from La Paz, Iloilo City emerged as champion in the rapid division of the Visayas leg of the National Rapid Team and Individual Chess Championship held recently at Robinsons Galleria in Cebu.

The team – John Michael Silvederio, Fritz Bryan Porras and Mark Jossel Mariano – ended the seven-round match with 6 points, on five wins and two draws, and walked away with a P25,000 cash prize.

Finishing on second and third places, respectively, were RS Lancers and Team Negros.

RS Lancers – Ellan Asuela, Syrel Coleta and Romeo Sadia – topped the blitz division after finishing the seven-round match with six wins and one draw for 6.5 points. It brought home the P12,000 top purse.

Salon De Rose Team A finished on second place while Enagic Kangen settled for third place.

The tournament was organized by the Artillery Foundation of the Philippines, Inc. and the Philippine Academy of Chess Excellence./PN
