MANILA – DLSU Green Archers is not taking in former star player Ricci Rivero, his brother Rashleigh and Brent Paraiso for the upcoming UAAP Season 81, head coach Louie Gonzales disclosed.
Gonzales said he is content with his current lineup and believes that, in the absence of the three, the team still has the tools needed to compete.
“LOA (Leave of absence) silang tatlo. Pero napasok pa din sila sa DLSU,” Gonzales told Panay News. “Wala sila this year pero kung gusto nila they can try next year.”
In a statement, Rivero said he, his brother and Paraiso were on a one-year leave to fulfill commitments with corporate sponsors, amid persistent speculation that they were booted out because of prohibited substance use.
“So far maganda naman ang itinatakbo ng team sa practices and tune-up games,” Gonzales said. “For now, there is no plan to include them.”
He added: “Gusto ko muna ibigay iyong full trust ko sa current players. Maayos pa naman sila. OK din naman mga naiwan ni Aldin (Ayo) na work ethic sa mga bata.”
Even with the drug test result Rivero showed, Gonzales said there is no chance for the three to be included in the roster last-minute.
On Wednesday Rivero released a copy of the result of a hair follicle test done at the Omega Laboratories in Quezon City showing he was negative of any banned substance.
Moreover, the Rivero brothers and Paraiso have approached other Manila-based universities for possible transfer, but they were turned down, a source told this paper.
“Hindi namin sila matatanggap sa school namin,” said the source, an assistant coach. “Iyong mga ginagawa nila ay mahigpit na ipinagbabawal dito sa amin.” They did not elaborate./PN
