MANILA – National University Lady Bulldogs grabbed the solo lead in the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball with a 25-17, 25-13, 19-25, 29-27 win over Ateneo De Manila University Lady Eagles.

Jaja Santiago led the way with 26 points, on 19 attacks, six blocks and a service ace, for the Lady Bulldogs, which snapped its six-game losing streak against the Lady Eagles.

Jorelle Singh had five service aces for a 16-point effort, while Risa Sato tallied four blocks to finish with 12 markers for the NU, which also got 43 excellent sets on top of eight points from Jasmine Nabor.

“We will try to win as many games as possible,” said Lady Bulldogs head coach Roger Gorayeb, who hopes to ride on from their strong start and do better than their fifth place finish last year.

On Wednesday night at the San Juan Arena, the Lady Bulldogs fought back from a 4-12 deficit in the fourth frame behind Santiago, tying the match at 23-23. Both teams then battled to four deadlocks, the last was at 27-27 on a Julia Morado drop shot.

But Morado committed a service fault to put the Lady Bulldogs at a match point, 28-27. Nabor then delivered the game-clinching block on Michelle Morente to help the NU book its second straight win.

Bea de Leon finished with 14 points, including four blocks, while Jhoanna Maraguinot added 12 markers for the Lady Eagles, which failed to score a follow-up to its straight-set win over the University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses.

Earlier, Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws turned back Adamson University Lady Falcons, 25-12, 25-19, 25-16, for its first win in the season. Negrense Bernadeth Pons tallied 15 points to lead the way for the FEU./PN
