MANILA – National University Lady Bulldogs won another round in the 2017 Premier V-League Collegiate Conference after a 25-21, 21-25, 25-11, 25-18 victory over San Sebastian College Lady Stags.
Aiko Urdas led the way with 17 points while Jaja Santiago added 11 markers for the two-time defending champion NU, which improved to 2-0 and tied with Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws.
From a tight exchange early in the opening set, Lady Bulldogs surged to a 23-18 lead Monday night at the San Juan Arena. But SSC countered with a 3-1 run to come to within 3 points before a service error from them handed the set to NU.
Lady Bulldogs lost the second set but waxed hot early in the third to build a 16-8 lead behind Urdas and Santiago. The lead stretched when Lady Stags committed numerous errors.
NU opened the fourth set with a 10-4 lead but Lady Stags quickly trimmed this down to 2 points. Lady Bulldogs then turned to Urdas, Santiago and Risa Sato late in the set to clinch the victory.
“Siyempre, I always appreciate a win,” said Lady Bulldogs head coach Babes Castillo. “But the way we did it, hindi pa kami happy doon talaga. It shows that our system needs more work.”
Joyce Sta. Rita finished with 12 points while Nikka Dalisay contributed 9 markers for Lady Stags, which dropped to 1-2.
In the first game, University of the Philippines Lady Maroons swept Technological Institute of the Philippines Lady Engineers 25-20, 25-9, 25-13. Diana Carlos top-scored with 14 for Lady Maroons (1-1)./PN
