BACOLOD City – One of the suspected rebels caught in Mabinay, Negros Oriental was a former official of the progressive group Anakbayan – Cebu Chapter, the chapter chairwoman said.
Myles Cantal Albasin was their former chairwoman, incumbent leader Joisa Cesisca confirmed to Panay News and 104.7 FM Muews Radio Negros.
Albasin was also a former secretary-general of the Anakbayan chapter in the University of the Philippines Cebu, Cesisca said.
Albasin was arrested along with five other suspected rebels after an encounter with military and police officers.
Cesisca said that their last contact with Albasin was August last year and that her arrest surprised them.
She described Alasin as a “dedicated student leader” who empathizes with the “oppressed masses.” She said they were exposed to the lumad – indigenous people communities in Mindanao – where they helped provide basic services.
According to Cesisca, information from residents near the encounter site – coursed through their contacts with human rights groups – refuted the claims of the military.
The residents did not hear a single gunshot or a heavy exchange of gunfire between the group of suspected rebels and personnel of the Philippine Army’s 62nd Infantry Battalion, she claimed.
Albasin and her companions were taken to military trucks but there were no firearms, Cesisca said, citing accounts from residents.
The Army said the rebels were captured after a 45-minute gun battle in Barangay Luyang, Mabinay last Saturday.
High-powered firearms were recovered from the suspected rebels, said the Army.
Her parents and representatives from Karapatan-Cebu are visiting Albasin in Negros Oriental, Cesisca said./PN
