MANILA – De La Salle University Lady Spikers banked on its experience in the fifth set to pull off a 25-17, 21-25, 16-25, 25-20, 15-5 win over Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws in the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball at the San Juan Arena.

Reigning MVP Mary Joy Baron and Kim Kianna Dy led the way with 18 points apiece while Desiree Cheng had triple-double 10 points, 16 digs and 10 excellent receptions for Lady Spikers (8-2).

Trailing 2-1 set, Lady Spikers struggled early in the fourth set before getting its bearings to take a 21-17 advantage on Sunday. Cheng and Baron provided back-to-back hits each to force a fifth set.

Lady Spikers rode on the momentum in the fifth set for a 5-0 start behind Baron and Dy. Lady Tamaraws rallied to within 3-5 but Lady Spikers pulled away anew on consecutive points from Dy and Baron.

“Hindi naman siguro lahat mape-perfect … may kulang pa. May mga times na bumababa iyong self-confidence during the game so sabi ko ’di dapat ganoon,” said Lady Spikers head coach Ramil de Jesus.

Negrense Bernadeth Pons produced 16 hits while Toni Rose Basas added 11 points and 14 digs for Lady Tamaraws, which slid to fourth place (6-4).

In the first game Adamson University Lady Falcons arrested a two-game skid and avenged its first-round defeat to University of the East Lady Warriors with a 19-25, 25-11, 16-25, 25-16, 15-12 victory.

Jessica Galanza had 22 hits, including three service aces, 22 digs and 11 excellent receptions, while Mylene Paat scored all but one of her 18 points from spikes for Lady Falcons./PN
