Land conflict ‘motive in Balete shooting’

ILOILO City – Land conflict was believed to be the motive in a shooting incident that injured a couple in Barangay Aranas, Balete, Aklan.

Residents 59-year-old Jorge Valencia and his wife 47-year-old Vilma sustained gunshot wounds on the body, police said.

According to Balete police station chief Lieutenant Colonel Zacarias Rose, they are looking at “land conflict” as the possible motive.

“The victims have no derogatory records. The motive might be land dispute on the rice fields they are cultivating. We received reports there are other persons interested to the land,” Rose said.

Initial investigations revealed the couple was on their way home onboard a motorboat when unidentified armed men peppered them with bullets around 10:10 p.m. on June 2.

They already received medical treatment at the St. Gabriel Hospital in Aklan. /PN
