Las Vegas-like ‘welcome area’ mulled in Bacolod

BACOLOD City – The city government considers having a “welcome area” along the Bacolod-Silay Airport Access Road.

Mayor Evelio Leonardia on Monday met with representatives from the real estate company Megaworld Corp. to discuss the proposal.

“The concept is similar to the Las Vegas welcome area that has become iconic,” said Leonardia.

But the mayor said they have yet to determine where the budget for it would come from.

They are still finalizing the design, he added.

Leonardia said the welcome area will have a picturesque parking space and souvenir shops.

If pushed through, it will occupy the 2,000-square-meter lot property of Megaworld Corp. at the boundary of Bacolod and Talisay cities.

It is where the company plans to build its Forbes Hill residential district.

But Megaworld wants to sell the lot to the city government for P36 million, Leonardia said.

“If we will be able to do that, we will be the only city in the Philippines to have a welcome area,” he added./PN
