Beermen downs Kings, 104-102, for 2-0 semis lead

MANILA – Marcio Lassiter scored a game-winner as San Miguel Beermen cruised to a 104-102 overtime win over Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings in Game 2 of the PBA Philippine Cup semifinals last night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

With the scores tied at 102-all, Beermen snatched the advantage 104-102 following a put-back by Lassiter from a missed layup by June Mar Fajardo with just three seconds left.

Lassiter finished with 25 points, including four 3-point conversions, while Fajardo led the way with double-double 33 points and 19 rebounds for the three-time defending champion.

Beermen was behind for the most part but was able to get its shooting going in the third period behind Lassiter and Chris Ross to cut Kings’ 15-point advantage 70-73.

Kings was able to pull away anew 81-72 early in the fourth quarter but Beermen responded with a run, capped by back-to-back triples from Arwind Santos, to tie the count at 95-all.

In the extension period, Kings went up 102-98 with over a minute left after a trey by Joe Devance but Beermen got 6 straight points from Lassiter to take a 104-102 lead.

ā€œThis game is tsamba,ā€ said Beermen head Leo Austria. ā€œWe thought we were losing, but the pride and experience of the team, they didn’t want to lose.ā€

Japeth Aguilar led Kings with 28 points while Prince Caperal chipped in with career-best 26 markers. They continued to play without injured players Greg Slaughter, Arthur dela Cruz and Mark Caguioa./PN
