Lax port screening blamed for NegOcc drug problem

BACOLOD City – Lax security at the Dumaguete City Port in Negros Oriental has made possible the smuggling of illegal drugs into Negros Occidental, according to San Carlos City’s Mayor Renato Gustilo.

The bulk of illegal drugs in Negros Occidental originate from Mindanao; these are smuggled in via the Dumaguete City Port, said Gustilo, citing information from the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA).

There is no thorough inspection of cargoes entering Dumaguete City, he lamented.

The illegal drugs are then transported into San Carlos City where it is divided among drug groups, repackaged, and distributed to other areas.

Illegal drugs are being smuggled out of the city via motorboats.

“The problem with San Carlos City is may port kita [and] lapit kita sa boundary sang Region 7,” Gustilo said.

To further combat illegal drugs in the city, Gustilo said he introduced a reward system for operatives of the San Carlos City Police Station./PN
