MANILA – Sen. Leila de Lima’s former driver and bodyguard Ronnie Daya and alleged Eastern Visayas drug lord Kerwin Espinosa are facing off on Monday during the resumption of the Senate’s investigation into the killing of Albuera, Leyte mayor Rolando Espinosa.
But, de Lima in a recent interview said she has decided not to attend the hearing
Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian said that de Lima’s decision will be “more beneficial” so as not to hold back other senators from asking questions.
“From my standpoint if she will not be there then it will be a more open venue for other senators to discuss the issue and the truth,” said Gatchalian.
The former Valenzuela congressman said her non-appearance on Monday’s proceedings will avoid “complications” since de Lima’s alleged “ex-boyfriend” will testify.
For her part, de Lima said she expects her colleagues in the Senate to be “more professional,” “much fairer” and “much more decent” than some members of the House of Representatives who participated in the Bilibid drug inquiry last week.
She will just monitor the hearing insider her office, added the former Justice secretary.
“I just want the members of the Senate who would be participating in that hearing on Monday to just really focus on the actual issue, on the real issue of that hearing. What is the real issue of the hearing? To get to the bottom of the killing of mayor Espinosa and siyempre nagiging peripheral issue ‘yung drug connections kay Kerwin Espinosa kasi,” the senator explained.
Again, de Lima reiterated she never dealt with Espinosa, who claimed delivering a total of P8 million to de Lima to fund her senatorial campaign. Espinosa earlier said he gave the amount, in several occasions, to Dayan.
“I did not know him. I have not met him. I have not remembered meeting him. First time ko lang po siya nakita doon sa hearing last time dito sa Senado. At maski nga may picture, ‘di ko siya talaga matandaan.”
“I have supporting witnesses, ‘yung staff ko, ‘yung mga security ko na kasama ko sa Burnham because after the filing of my certificate of candidacy in October, nagsimula na rin po akong umikot-ikot,” she added./PN
