ILOILO – To ensure that no campaign materials and other election paraphernalia contribute to pollution, the local government unit of Lemery in Iloilo Province will hold a post-barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections clean-up drive on Nov. 6.

Executive Order No. 2023-74 on this was issued by Mayor Oscar Villegas, Jr., dated Oct. 27.

Villegas said it is essential to ensure that communities return to a state of normalcy, cleanliness, and public order in a timely and efficient manner following an election.

“Campaign materials, tarpaulins, flyers, and other election paraphernalia can contribute to environmental issues if not promptly removed from public spaces,” read part of the order.

The barangay captain, along with other barangay officials, will lead the effort to coordinate the clean-up drives.

All candidates, political parties, and their representatives are required to join in and help.

Non-compliance may lead to legal action, including the imposition of fines and sanctions.

The Office of the Municipal Mayor, together with the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) designate Forester Hannan B. Oncio, EnP, with the support of the Provincial Government Environment and Natural Resources Office, shall monitor the clean-up activities and encourage province-wide drives in alignment with this initiative.

With these, Villegas ordered the MENRO to launch a public awareness campaign across 31 barangays in Lemery.

The barangay shall be responsible for the implementation and enforcement of the executive order, including monitoring compliance and imposing penalties as necessary.

The Commission on Elections will also be notified of such non-compliance for further action as necessary./PN
