BACOLOD City – Classes in all public kindergarten, elementary and secondary schools, as well as Bacolod City College are suspended today.
Mayor Evelio R. Leonardia announced this in a statement released on Sunday in view of the planned whole-day transport strike.
Transport groups in Negros Island Region are staging a massive “people’s strike” today.
The United Negros Drivers and Operators Center (Undoc) and the Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operators Nationwide will protest the proposed phaseout of public utility vehicles 15 years and older.
Undoc secretary-general Diego Malacad said they will also call against oil deregulation and the planned imposition of excise tax on petroleum products.
Cynthia Demavivas, schools superintendent of the Department of Education – Division of Bacolod, requested for the suspension of classes, Leonardia said.
Senior Superintendent Jack Wanky, city police chief, and Superintendent Luisito Acebuche, Bacolod Traffic Authority Office head, recommended it, too, he said.
Meanwhile the city government will provide transportation to workers in government and private offices.
“We are deploying our two tourist buses and 12 trucks of IPM [Construction and Development Corp.] to be used by our riding public,” said Leonardia.
The mayor said the vehicles will ferry passengers from the following barangays to the public plaza from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.:
* Barangay Handumanan – 3 trucks
* Barangay Sum-ag – 1 bus, 1 truck
* Barangay Bata – 1 bus, 1 truck
* Barangay Estefania – 2 trucks
* Barangay Granada – 2 trucks
* Barangay Alangilan – 1 truck
* Barangay Mansilingan – 2 trucks./PN
