BACOLOD City – Will Mayor Evelio “Bing” Leonardia suspend classes on June 5 and 6?
Earlier this month, transport groups in the city and province disclosed they will be staging a transport strike on those days timed with the resumption of classes.
Leonardia said an assessment with Bacolod Schools Division superintendent Cynthia Demavivas will be conducted this Friday.
He will also hold a consultation with the Land Transportation Office, Commission on Higher Education and the Bacolod City Police Office for them to “size up” the situation.
“It is too early to make conclusions,” he said yesterday.
“No matter how small or big the city is, [they need to be] ready for they have transport facility to provide,” Leonardia added.
Meanwhile, Department of Education Negros Island Region director Gilbert Sadsad said it is up to the decision of the local government unit if they are going to suspend classes.
By law, mayors and governors are authorized to suspend or cancel classes depending on their assessment of the situation, he added.
United Negros Drivers and Operators Center secretary-general Diego Malacad said the transport strike is a protest against the government plan to phase out public utility jeepneys 15 years old and older./PN
