Filipinos are no strangers to heat and humidity. From 42-degree Celsius temperatures to ruthless tropical storms, we’ve learned to roll with nature’s punches – casualties and destruction included.
… which got us thinking about rainy days.
Rainy days are poignant. We often use this dreary, drenched season as a reflection of our lives. Here’s what we can learn from them.
- WE ARE NEVER IN CONTROL OF EVERYTHING – If rainy days and Covid-19 have taught us anything, it’s that there are so many things in life we cannot control. No amount of planning or praying, or saving for a rainy day can stop nature’s wrath. This list includes global economic forces and events of nature.
- THERE IS A TIME FOR EVERYTHING – There’s a time for everything and a season for every activity under the heavens. Everything on this planet is about timing. We often compare ourselves to others. It might seem like everyone is moving up and forward while we’re stuck in the middle of the ordinary. And yet nature does not hurry. It gets to where it needs to be in due time.
- LIFE IS CONSTANTLY CHANGING – We love sunny days, cool days, and days, when you feel nothing, could go wrong. But we can’t have sunny days all year round. If we did, then we could also have to contend with drought and dying crops. Change is needed for growth and progress. True, change can be uncomfortable, painful even, especially when it’s unexpected. But tragedy happens. We must learn how to pick ourselves up, and start anew… start with a heavy heart, start broke, start without all the answers. The lesson is to simply learn how to adapt. Enjoy the sun while it’s out and take delight in the stormy weather.
- IT’s BEST TO BE PREPARED – What do you do when you get hold of a weather report/warning? We go get our supplies ready, charge our phones, stock up on food and medicines and prepare backup for emergency cases. It’s always prudent to have plans A to B (or even up to Z!).
- THE RAINY DAYS ALLOW US TO SLOW DOWN AND THINK – Our lives are fast-paced for good reason. We want to progress, move up, move beyond. But when the weather just isn’t cooperative, we think of safety and staying put. We cancel appointments, reinforce our homes, and prep survival bags. We make contingency plans at work and brace ourselves for any eventuality. But it’s also a time to pause. When the storms are simply too strong, there isn’t much you can do but stop and be still. You need to drop whatever you’re doing and just sit back and watch the world for a while.
Let the rains remind you of the important things in your life
