MANILA – National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) member school Colegio de San Juan de Letran is looking to downsize its athletic operations.
The school’s Task Force on Athletics proposed scrapping some sports teams under its program that have been underperforming the last four years as part of its Business Continuity and Recovery Plan due to coronavirus disease 2019 crisis.
The sports teams identified as candidates for dropping are beach volleyball, men’s and women’s volleyball, seniors football, men’s and women’s swimming, track and field for the seniors and juniors division, and women’s and juniors taekwondo.
With the recent cancellation of the NCAA Season 95, student-athletes will likely be sent home from their dormitories for the third term (June to July, 2020).
Scholarships for academic year 2020-2021, on the other hand, will be limited to only 372 student-athletes only. Letran will then evaluate the status for the second semester. Players in the Team B of the school’s juniors basketball program will no longer enjoy the benefits.
The meal allowances of the school’s student-athletes, meanwhile, will be reduced to only 25 percent, while the dormitories will be given to those players who at a disadvantage economically.
As the host of NCAA Season 96, Letran is also anticipating sports events to be scaled down./PN
