‘Let’s rest from politics for the time being’

ILOILO City – “Maybe we can push through with the suspension of the election.”

This was what Mayor Jerry Treñas answered when asked about moves in Congress to postpone the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) election set on Dec. 5 this year.

Several lawmakers have filed bills for the postponement.

“Sa subong pa lang kadamo na gakadto sa akon madalagan (for the barangay election and seeking my       help),” Treñas said.

“Mas maayo guro maka pulopahuway ta anay sa pulitika,” he added.

Leyte’s Cong. Richard Gomez filed House Bill No. 937 seeking the postponement of the Dec. 5, 2022 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections to Dec. 5, 2023.

The one-year delay will give the national government a “financial breathing room”, citing the recent May 2022 national elections.

Funds for the elections could be used to prop up the ailing agriculture sector, he said.

Treñas expressed support to the proposal to increase the term of the barangay officials from three to five years.

“Naga-agree ko nga obrahon na sila five years para nga indi tam-an ka frequent sang elections. Kon five years na ang aton barangay officials, daw ma tulotawhay para sa aton,” he added.PN
