THIS IS a daily scenario – road mishaps. Traffic investigators document the incidents and interview witnesses, mediate and secure compromises between parties, etc.
***
Also, one at times hears about lives lost due to the recklessness of drivers who are either under the influence of liquor, or just plain careless.
***
“A traffic investigation usually becomes a mediation on who takes care of the hospital bill or burial cost. Or who shoulders the repair of the offended vehicle. It stops there,” said an engineer.
“The insurance company foots the bill. The culprit driver and the surviving driver victim are back on the road. No one cares,” a doctor butted in.

“What is the role of the Land Transportation Office (LTO) in these cases? Is there no deeper investigation by the traffic authorities as to who deserve the revocation of their driver’s licenses,” asked an accountant.
***
“The LTO is busy campaigning against drivers not wearing facemasks, and a fourth offense would result to the revocation of the erring driver’s license. Amusing, but is not wearing a facemask more serious than reckless driving?” asked the doctor.
***
As for hundreds of road accidents involving motorcycles, it looks like their drivers’ ignorance of safe driving is the culprit,” observed the accountant.
***
“The LTO could form a Road Discipline Board. If the driver is found guilty of reckless driving resulting to loss of lives, such driver should not be allowed to drive for at least a year for every life lost,” the accountant further said.
