DUMAGUETE City – Transactions at the Land Transportation Office (LTO) in Bayawan City, Negros Oriental were suspended on Thursday after the district office was struck by lightning late Wednesday afternoon.

Troubleshooting was ongoing to ensure that operations resume as soon as possible, LTO-Bayawan City chief Alberta Janine Lawas said on Thursday.

City Engineer’s Office personnel have assessed the LTO’s office and the building it occupies, Lawas said.

The lightning strike affected the cashier’s office and its entire electrical system, Lawas said, citing initial assessment.

A streak of lightning cut across the sky and into the LTO office, hitting the cashier’s booth, shortly before the closing of office hours on Wednesday, Lawas said.

Fortunately cashier Enrique Benlot was not in his work station. He would have been electrocuted, said Lawas.

Lawas was thankful no one was injured from among her staff and their lone client when lightning struck.

Heavy rains and thunderstorm started around 4 p.m. on Wednesday in Bayawan City, about 102 kilometers south of this capital.

When the thunderstorm got worse, Lawas said she instructed her staff to shut down all computers and other electrical appliances, but then lightning struck and sent the employees scampering for safety.

At first they thought only the cashier’s printer, the television set and their Wi-Fi connection were damaged, but now it looked like there was more, said Lawas.

The cashier, which issues receipts required for every transaction, is the most important office at the LTO, she explained.

Lawas thanked the Bayawan City government under Mayor Pryde Henry Teves for sending personnel from the City Engineer’s Office for the assessment and trouble-shooting. (Judy Flores-Partlow, PNA)
