ILOILO – Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. urged the police to be upright by disassociating themselves from personalities involved in illegal activities.
“You must learn to live within your means especially now that your salaries have increased,” Defensor said.
He welcomed the key officers of the Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO) led by Senior Superintendent Marlon Tayaba who made a New Year’s call at his office on Tuesday.
Defensor called on the police to earn the respect of the public by doing their job well.
He observed that over time the public’s perception of the police went down but he believed it slowly regained the public’s respect and trust.
Provincial Administrator Raul Banias revealed that for this year the provincial government allotted funds for the procurement of additional firearms and equipment for the IPPO’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team.
The provincial government also plans to procure generator sets and a vehicle for the IPPO.
Defensor stressed he was satisfied with Tayaba’s performance as IPPO chief.
Tayaba presented the IPPO’s accomplishment report for the year 2017. There was a marked reduction in crimes.
He also reported on IPPO’s accomplishments with regard to the anti-illegal drugs campaign and operations against illegal gambling, loose firearms and illegal fishing, among others.
On the other hand, at the annual New Year’s Call of the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) in Camp Delgado on Wednesday, Chief Superintendent Cesar Hawthorne Binag, Western Visayas police director, said that with better pay, there is no more reason for policemen to engage in illegal activities.
“Sa taas ng salary ng mga pulis ngayon, ewan ko kung magloloko pa sila,” said Binag.
This year, the basic monthly pay in the Philippine National Police for Police Officer 1 would be P29,000 up from P14,000.
“I would not hesitate to dismiss them from the service kung magloloko pa sila,” said Binag, reiterating PRO-6’s flagship program, Personnel Management Program.
“All our personnel must acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes for them to be capable, effective and credible. Last year, we began equipping our investigation, intelligence and maneuver personnel with various trainings,” said Binag.
This year, he wanted this intensified. (Erly Garcia, Capitol News/PN)
