ILOILO City – Barangay officials of Loboc in Lapuz district had themselves tested for illegal drugs at the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Region 6 office recently.
They wanted to be role models in their village, said Barangay Captain Carlos Javellana.
“We also wanted our barangay officially declared free of illegal drugs,” he added.
Councilman Godofredo Longanilla said Loboc barangay leaders were united in the campaign.
Senior citizens of the barangay also joined in the drug testing.
Of the city’s 180 barangay councils, 30 have so far volunteered to have their officials and village watchmen (barangay tanods) tested for illegal drugs, PDEA Region 6 records showed.
One tanod in Barangay Sto. Rosario, City Proper tested positive for illegal drugs, according to PDEA.
This tanod was recommended for drug rehabilitation.
In February, PDEA’s central office came out with guidelines for the implementation of barangay drug-clearing program to curb the proliferation of illegal drugs
“Barangays, as the first line of defense, should be tapped as force multipliers of the national anti-drug campaign at the grassroots level. An integrated approach to emerge victorious in the war on drugs is to rid illegal drugs barangay by barangay,” said PDEA director general Isidro Lapeña.
Among the general guidelines were:
* mandatory creation of Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Councils nationwide
* conduct of barangay drug-clearing operations in three phases, namely: the pre-operation phase, operation phase and post-operation phase
* classification of barangays in determining the priority areas for clearing operations
* duties of local chief executives in the barangay drug-clearing program, and
* penalty for non-compliance./PN
