GUIMARAS – Fifteen local fish farmers in the province participated in a two-day seminar-workshop and hands-on training on the breeding and culture of freshwater species such as tilapia, catfish and mudfish on March 6 and 7.
The seminar-workshop was initiated by the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI) in collaboration with the Provincial Office for Agricultural Services (POAS) and the Bureau of Plant Industry-Guimaras National Crop Research, Development, and Production Support Center.
The activity was part of the project, “Promotion of breeding and farming technologies of commercially important freshwater fishes in Western Visayas to increase aquaculture production.”
NFRDI-Scientist I, Dr. Casiano H. Choresca Jr., said they are willing to extend expertise and resources to help the provincial government in the breeding and culture of freshwater species.
In addition, a multi-freshwater fish hatchery currently under construction would reduce mortality rates during dispersal due to stress during handling and long hours of transportation.
The participants were supervised by NFRDI. They also learned how to administer several types of hormones to catfish and mudfish to induce spawning.
At the end of the two-day training, participants were given tilapia fingerlings. (With a report from Hasmin Villanueva/POAS)/PN
