MANILA –Antonio Trillanes IV called on the Senate Committee on Banks to investigate the alleged noncooperation of the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) in the investigation into President Rodrigo Duterte’s bank records.
The Office of the Ombudsman terminated its investigation into Trillanes’ allegations that Duterte had unexplained wealth after the AMLC refused to provide the anti-graft body “a report or confirmation on the requested vital data.”
“Let us remember that the executive director of the AMLC was appointed by Duterte and has since been proactively protecting his political master,” the senator said, referring to lawyer Mel GeorgieRacela.
The Senate must examine the legality of the AMLC’s refusal to comply with an Ombudsman request, Trillanes said.
“Ultimately, the truth about this very important issue is stored in the data storage of AMLC and BPI,” he said.
Overall Deputy Ombudsman Arthur Carandangpreviously claimed they have documents showing Duterte had more than P1 billion in the bank.
Carandangclaimed the AMLC provided the documents but the latter denied this./PN
