MANILA – The Liberal party (LP) considers Vice President Leni Robredo as standard bearer for 2022 presidential elections even if she is yet to pursue such a bid, Senator Francis Pangilinan, LP president said on Thursday.
“Siyempre, siya ang pinakamataas na opisyal ng partido and the highest ranked elected official among us [in LP ranks] so she is also being considered,” Pangilinan said.
“She has said na wala pa siyang desisyon, na marami pang puwedeng mangyari … so our focus now is how we can help our people amid the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic,” the senator added.
Pangilinan admitted there were consultations and recruitment done to expand opposition party’s membership so their candidates and other allied groups will be able to secure victory.
Based on the January poll of Pulse Asia, Robredo is facing an uphill climb which ranked her sixth with eight percent rating among 2022 presidential bets.
The vice president has previously said that she is keeping her options open for the upcoming election.
“I’m leaving everything open,” Robredo said in an interview with Bloomberg TV.
“A lot can still happen, and I’ve always said that the presidency is a destiny. There are so many politicians who have sought the presidency and have prepared for it for many years” she added. /PN
