ILOILO City – The Land Transportation Office (LTO) Region 6 under the leadership of Director Gaudioso P. Geduspan II and Assistant Regional Director Jeck Conlu has strengthened its campaign against reckless driving, including the recommendation to revoke the licenses of at least three motorists involved in fatal vehicular accidents.

In one notable case, a motorist from San Miguel, Iloilo was implicated in a tragic collision that resulted in the death of a motorcycle rider.

The accident occurred on Nov. 12, 2024, at the U-turn slot on Airport Road in Barangay Camambugan, Santa Barbara, Iloilo.

The driver of a Nissan Almera Sedan was traveling at 77 km/h, exceeding the 60 km/h speed limit, when he collided with a Suzuki motorcycle.

The motorcycle rider had made a sudden left turn prior to the collision.

A blotter report filed by the victim’s sibling prompted an investigation by LTO-6. It was determined that the motorist’s failure to reduce speed near the U-turn slot was a significant factor in the accident.

The driver alleged that the motorcycle rider was under the influence of alcohol and counterflowed.

However, his own admission of overspeeding constituted a violation of Section 48 of RA 4136 (the Land Transportation and Traffic Code), which prohibits reckless driving.

Based on these findings, Director Geduspan recommended the revocation of the driver’s license for four years and its immediate confiscation.

A show-cause order was issued on Dec. 6, 2024, and the motorist provided a written explanation on Jan. 8, 2025.

LTO-6 stressed the importance of adhering to traffic laws, particularly in areas like U-turn slots where extra caution is necessary.

“By exercising reasonable caution, the loss of life and property can be prevented,” Geduspan said.

LTO chief and Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to road safety and accountability, emphasizing the need for strict compliance with traffic regulations to avoid similar incidents.

The LTO reminds the public of its mission to enforce road safety laws and ensure justice for all parties affected by traffic-related incidents./PN
