ILOILO City – The Land Transportation Office (LTO) Region 6 has revoked the license of a driver who crashed into decorative flower pots along the Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr. Avenue on December 27, 2024.
LTO-6 director Atty. Gaudioso P. Geduspan II said the agency has zero-tolerance on reckless driving.
“LTO-6 will not hesitate to revoke licenses if it is proven that the incident was caused without any valid reason,” Geduspan said in a statement.
The driver, identified only as “Danny”, admitted to being intoxicated at the time of the incident.
A police investigation revealed that he was driving home to Barangay Calubihan, Jaro district after a drinking session when he became confused and attempted a U-turn, colliding with the flower pots serving as traffic barriers.
Following a recommendation from the LTO Legal Office, Geduspan immediately approved the revocation of Danny’s license.
Mayor Jerry Treñas earlier directed the City Legal Office to file a case against the driver, expressing outrage over the damage caused to public property and the danger posed to public safety.
“Such behavior endangers lives and compromises the safety of our city,” said Treñas.
The flower pots, installed as temporary barriers along Diversion Road in Mandurriao, were part of a holiday traffic safety initiative by the city government.
Treñas also commended the Iloilo City Police Office for their prompt apprehension of the driver and announced a personal reward for the officers involved.
“Let this serve as a strong warning to all drunk drivers: such actions will not be tolerated,” Treñas said.
Treñas reiterated the city’s dedication to maintaining road safety and protecting public property, warning that anyone caught driving under the influence would face severe legal repercussions.
“We are committed to keeping our roads safe and protecting public property. I call on everyone to be responsible and follow traffic rules to prevent incidents like this,” he added./PN
