BACOLOD City – Drivers and operators of tricycles in this capital city will gather for a general assembly to discuss traffic rules.
Land Transportation Office (LTO) Region 6 director Roland Ramos said the tentative schedule for the assembly is in the first week of August.
Ramos met with the Mayor Evelio Leonardia yesterday to ask permission to use the Bacolod BAYS Center as venue for the assembly.
Around 5,000 participants, mostly from drivers’ associations, are expected to attend the event.
Ramos said LTO Region 6 allows tricycles to ply on Western Visayas highways, provided that they follow traffic rules.
One of these is using only the rightmost lane of the road, Ramos added.
Earlier this month, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board has considered banning the use of tricycles as a school service.
LTFRB board member Aileen Lizada said overloading tricycles is illegal and unsafe.
“Hindi kasi siya safe. Iyong isang request namin iyong tricycles kung pwede huwag na payagang maging school bus service. Let us think more of the safety noong mga bata rather kung ano ang ititipid natin,” Lizada said.
The laws covering the use of tricycles as school service vary per city or town. Local government units are the ones that issue tricycle franchises./PN
