Lyceum smothers Jose Rizal Univ in NCAA basketball

MANILA – Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates hacked out a 95-77 victory over the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers in the NCAA Season 95 men’s basketball at the San Juan Arena.


Mike Nzeusseu made a triumphant return for the 4-1 Pirates with 13 points and eight rebounds in 16 minutes. Ralph Tansingco also came up with 13 markers contribution.


“It’s a good win for us because we know that coming into the game, alam namin na madaming fans ‘yung JRU,” said Pirates head coach Topex Robinson. “We were glad with how they were able to handle pressure.”


Nzeusseu made an immediate impact for the Pirates, which led from start to finish and even registered its biggest advantage of the match at 28 points, 80-52, in the fourth quarter. On the part of the Heavy Bombers, it not only saw its two-game winning run got snapped but also witnessed the ejection of head coach Louie Gonzales for two technicals as well as Agem Miranda for punching Pirates’ rookie Biern Laurente.


Meanwhile, Arellano University Chiefs halted its three-game losing skid. It toppled the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals, 86-77. Kent Salado top-scored with 24 markers for the winning team.


With the Generals threatening to make a late rally, cutting a once 16-point lead down to just 10 with under two minutes left, Salado and Marlon Espiritu came up with timely hits to preserve their win./PN
