ILOILO – A man armed with a machete in Banate, Iloilo, was shot dead after he allegedly attacked the locals and responding police.
According to Police Lieutenant General Enrique Robles, chief of Banate Municipal Police Station, they received reports on Dec. 14 of a man, later identified as 46-year-old Roderic Villanueva, of the town’s Barangay Carmelo, running amok and threatening people with a machete behind the town hall.
Authorities revealed that Villanueva may have been suffering from a nervous breakdown. He was previously receiving treatment at the Pototan Mental Health Unit in Pototan town.
In the ensuing chase, Executive Master Sergeant Geronimo Gano was hit by the machete, and Police Corporal Philip Silver Zamora had to fire his gun three times.
A civilian was also hit by a stray bullet.
Gano and the civilian are both expected to recover from their injuries. (With additional details from RMN and Aksyon Radyo)/PN
